2D/3D animation for the Arnigel TV commercial
After a rich first experience at Ubisoft, off to new shores: 2D/3D animation for the Arnigel TV commercial at Vanilla Seed in Lyon.

After such a rich first experience at Ubisoft, I’m off to new shores. This time I’m trying out the “intermittent du spectacle” status, France’s system for freelance entertainment workers, on 2D/3D animation for the Arnigel TV commercial.
At the Vanilla Seed studio
A lovely place to work! Based in the centre of Lyon, this small animation studio is great. Run by Jeff Sarazin, a former animation teacher at Bellecour, the project team was a small crew of 3 or 4 animators.

From 3D to 2D
When I arrived on the project, everything was already in place, and I dove straight into the animation. The style is cute and cartoony, in 2D. So I was a little surprised when I was asked to animate the little boy in 3ds Max. In fact the whole process was built on rapid iteration thanks to 3D, since there’s no need to redraw everything when a movement isn’t working. Only once the animation was approved by the client, the Boiron laboratories for their Arnigel cream, did we rotoscope it for a 2D look.
I learned quite a lot: the process was clever, especially when you know how often clients can change their minds. And rotoscoping in Flash, which I didn’t know at all.
A shame the assignment was so short, I really loved working at this studio!
See you soon for new animations!
