The OH! books from Éditions Braques
I discovered this joyful universe when a colleague recommended me for the project. They’re nursery rhyme books for children, tied to a mobile app. You scan one of the illustrations with the app and off you go to the YouTube channel, where the illustrations come to life!
That was my job on the OH! ZOO edition: animating the illustrations that had already been drawn.
A new horizon
It was a complete change from the worlds I usually work in, especially at Ubi with assassinations flying in every direction. A real breath of fresh air! I had to hold myself back from going for realistic animation. The movements needed to be clear and very simple. So simple that these aren’t the animations I’ll be putting front and centre in my reel. At the same time, it forced me to focus, in spite of myself. In the past I tended to spread myself thin, because I had the time and budget wasn’t really an issue. Here I had to work fast, one day per video, edit and client feedback included, to stay within deadlines and budget. Very constructive for learning to get straight to the point! I also kept spelunking deeper into After Effects, since these animations made good use of the software’s famous expressions, which are wonderfully handy.
In total I animated 10 videos for this book, one for each of the 10 illustrations.
