A new assignment at Weta Digital: a teenage dream come true. From September 2017, I’m starting a new adventure at the famous visual effects studio based in New Zealand.

I’ll grant you, their logo is terrifying, with its giant cricket of doom (a weta, as it happens).

Weta Digital

If you know the 3D animation world, this VFX studio needs no introduction. Go see a blockbuster like Guardians of the Galaxy, and if you have the patience to sit through the credits, you’ll spot Weta’s name almost every time.

For everyone else, a bit of history: Weta Digital was born in 1993 thanks to Peter Jackson, director of the magical Lord of the Rings, to handle post-production on his film Heavenly Creatures. From there, the machine took off. They’ve contributed visual effects to countless films: The Lord of the Rings, of course, but also King Kong, Planet of the Apes, and the list goes on…

Over the years they’ve pioneered plenty of FX technology: performance capture, crowd software, rendering, and more.

To me, Weta Digital is a bit like my religion: it’s what I turn to whenever I’m in doubt, and above all, their work is what sparked my passion for visual effects in film.

A childhood dream

Those who know me know this already. I’ve dreamed of working at this studio since I was a teenager. Some people dream of getting married and starting a family. Others dream of buying a car and a house far from their roots. Me, I was a little off the beaten path.

But no matter! To each their own dreams, it takes all sorts to make a world, as they say. I’ll admit that by going freelance, I’d drifted a tiny bit away from that goal. But apparently fate exists, because that’s exactly when they reached out to work with me on their upcoming projects. Sometimes you just have to let go.

An 8 month pause

All that to say that for 8 months I’ll be devoting myself fully to this assignment. I won’t be taking on new projects until June 2018. I could have worked on things in parallel, but between the jet lag and the workload waiting for me over there, I wouldn’t be as effective as I’d want to be for other collaborations.

I’ll be back very soon to tell you all about this new experience,

XOXO
